The old game show Let’s Make a Deal, hosted by Monty Hall, gave the contestant a chance to win a very expensive prize by choosing from doors number one, two and three. Many mathematical debates have been put forth relating to the probability of picking the correct door once a first incorrect choice had been made and only two doors to choose from remained. The debate continues and still contributes to a contradiction that negates generally accepted beliefs. You don’t have to be extremely skilled or versed in mathematical probabilities to win large sums of money in certain games.

What does this have to do with the game of poker? It is possible, when playing poker for money either online, or in real physical casinos, to make more money playing poker in one year than many people might make in ten to fifteen years, or perhaps a lifetime. You don’t have to be a poker professional to do this as illustrated by various television broadcasts when amateur poker players make the final table in a major poker tournament and win millions of dollars. Poker players come from all walks of life and many varied backgrounds. You can learn to play free poker online, or even from books and articles as well as watching television broadcasts. The cult movie classic Rounder’s would even be a good way to start.

In poker, players are dealt random cards every hand and then make judgments on if or how they will play based on the initial cards they are dealt, any community cards, or visible cards of their opponents in certain games. Regardless of the number of books read or mathematical projections on probability, luck and your own style of play can go a long way to making you money. You just might be sitting in the lucky chair (equate to picking the correct door) in the right place at the right time and getting the right cards.

Poker has become a competitive sport. So unless you become a true student of the game, you won’t be able to consistently make money in poker through sheer luck. Practice, patience and a knack for the game are what will turn you into a pro. So learn poker in one of the many venues available to you, improve your skills, and give yourself a chance to have fun and make money at the same time.
